There are many different reasons to leave your hometown and move to a new part of Sweden, or perhaps the world. For Magnus Lundgren, who was born and raised in Säffle, the new place to live became Torsby. Or more precisely, Östmark.
In the newly renovated kitchen a few kilometers outside Torsby, there’s plenty of hustle and bustle. Dad Fredrik is frying minced meat while Mom Maria chops cabbage. In the living room, the children Hilma, 9, and Arvid, 12, are watching TV while waiting for dinner. It’s Monday evening, and the family has just returned home after the day’s work and all their extracurricular activities.
Petra Grothe and Esther Hoolwerf from Utrecht in the Netherlands wanted to do something different. They were tired of the crowds back home and longed for nature – water, forests, open landscapes, views, and tranquility.

A life in the village – The Tillberg family’s journey from Stockholm to Likenäs
At Backa Farm in Likenäs, it’s quiet and peaceful. A few goats graze calmly in their pasture. A pile of firewood waits to be carried into the woodshed. Christer and Maria Tillberg have lived here for 36 years.
Carolina Mosoni and Simone Donsante did the opposite – they left the Eternal City to start anew in Torsby. In February 2025, they moved from Italy to northern Värmland. An unusual choice, perhaps, but for them, it felt completely natural.
