Welcome to Torsby Municipality – the northernmost and largest municipality in Värmland by area. The municipality covers 4,162 square kilometers, which is nearly one-fourth of all of Värmland. 

From north to south, Torsby Municipality stretches about 160 kilometers, and within it are many communities, each with its own history, services, and sense of togetherness. The main town, Torsby, is located in the southern part of the municipality. We border four Swedish and five Norwegian municipalities, giving the area a unique position and creating natural connections across the border.

Rental housing

Torsby Bostäder is the largest provider of rental apartments and commercial premises in Torsby Municipality. To rent an apartment, you need to register in Torsby Bostäder’s housing queue. If you have been offered a job within the municipality and have a commuting distance of more than 80 kilometers (or more than 1.5 hours one way), you may be eligible to apply for a priority rental through the employment market program.

Communities in Torsby Municipality

Torsby

Torsby is the main town of the municipality, located about ten kilometers from the border with Sunne Municipality. Here you’ll find schools, preschools, a health center, hospital, dentists, a pharmacy, a library, retirement homes, and several other important community services.

In the town center, there are many businesses, shops, and restaurants. Community life is broad and active, with a large number of associations in sports, culture, and civic engagement. Torsby Skidtunnel & Sportcenter is also located here, a year-round facility for cross-country skiing close to the town center.

Torsby also offers museums, heritage museums, exercise trails, hiking routes, and several accommodation facilities. The town is a natural meeting place and serves as a hub for commerce, services, community life, and transportation throughout the municipality.

Lekvattnet

Lekvattnet is located about 20 kilometers west of Torsby, along the E16 road toward Norway. The village is often called “the gateway to Finnskogen” and is a place rich in history with an active community life.

Here you’ll find local services such as Finnskogens Ostaffär, which serves as a country store, café, and agent for both the pharmacy and the liquor store. Lekvattnet is also home to Torsby Finnskogscentrum, which showcases the Forest Finn cultural heritage, as well as several heritage farms and hiking trails.

Lekvattnet is characterized by strong local engagement, with active associations and businesses in areas such as forestry, construction, and tourism.

Östmark

Östmark is located about 23 kilometers northwest of Torsby, along road 947 toward the Norwegian border. The village has a school up to grade five, a preschool, an after-school center, a retirement home, and a fire station. There are also sports facilities such as a ski stadium, illuminated trails, a football field, a motor track, and a swimming area by Lake Kläggen.

In the village center, you’ll find ICA Nära Östmarks handel, which serves as both a grocery store and a local service point. Here you’ll find postal, parcel, pharmacy, and liquor store services, as well as a fuel station and a recycling station. The store also functions as a meeting place and information hub for both residents and visitors.

Östmark has a vibrant community life with many active associations in sports, culture, and outdoor activities. Every summer, Östmarksdagarna is organized, a local festival featuring markets, competitions, and cultural events that bring together both residents and visitors.

Vitsand

Vitsand is located 23 kilometers north of Torsby, along road 954. The village has a church, preschool, senior housing, fire station, community facilities, and an unmanned grocery store that also serves as a local service point. There is also a heritage farm, active associations, and around fifteen businesses in areas such as tourism and construction.

In Vitsand, you’ll find the Hovfjället ski resort, offering several downhill slopes, cross-country trails, a restaurant, accommodations, and a campsite. The area also features hiking trails, nature reserves, and excellent fishing opportunities. In Vägsjöfors, which is part of Vitsand, there are hotels, campsites, and other accommodation options, as well as trails for cycling and mountain biking.

Vitsand is a vibrant community with a strong sense of togetherness, rich leisure opportunities, and good services for both residents and visitors.

Stöllet

Stöllet is located about 40 kilometers northeast of Torsby in the Klarälven Valley, where the main roads RV62, E45, and E16 meet at Värnäskorset. The village has a preschool, an elementary school up to grade five, an after-school center, assisted and senior housing, as well as a fire station. Klarälvdalens folkhögskola (folk high school) with its library is also located here.

Services in Stöllet include Coop Stöllet, which offers pharmacy, liquor store, and parcel services. At Värnäs, you’ll find the Mac 45 roadside store with a restaurant, kiosk, fuel station, electric car charging, and parcel services. The area also has a recycling station, businesses in several sectors, and a vibrant community life.

Stöllet is beautifully situated by the Klarälven River and offers both outdoor recreation and tourism. Here you’ll find campsites, cabin villages, hiking trails, fishing waters, and activities such as timber rafting.

Ambjörby

Ambjörby is located about 50 kilometers northeast of Torsby, along highway 62 on the eastern side of the Klarälven River. The village has a community center, a cinema (Bio Nordvärmland), and an active football club, Nordvärmlands FF, with its home field at Nyvallens IP. There are also businesses in several industries and community associations with strong local engagement.

Services are available at Tempo Nordvärmland, which serves as both a grocery store and a local service point. Here you’ll find postal and parcel services, pharmacy and liquor store agents, fishing permits, home delivery, and tourist information. Nearby, there is a recycling station, and the mobile library makes regular stops.

Ambjörby is also known for Fämtfallet and the 8-kilometer hiking trail Fämtleden. The area also features the Femtåbanan folkrace track, a swimming area by the Klarälven River, a cabin village, and the annual event Backa Flygfest (Backa Air Festival).

Likenäs

Likenäs is located in the Klarälven Valley along highway 62, about 60 kilometers northeast of Torsby. The village has a preschool, a health center, and a pharmacy, as well as an active community life with clubs for motorsports, football, and skiing.

Services are available at ICA Nära Likenäs Allköp, which is open around the clock and serves as a local service point. Here you’ll find postal and parcel services, pharmacy and liquor store agents, lottery games, fishing permits, home delivery, a small café corner, and a recycling station. Nearby, you’ll also find GA-macken, which offers a kiosk and fuel services, and where the mobile library makes regular stops.

Just outside Likenäs lies Branäs, one of Sweden’s largest ski resorts, featuring 35 slopes, 33 lifts, restaurants, accommodations, and campsites.

Sysslebäck

Sysslebäck is located on the eastern side of the Klarälven River, along highway 62, about 80 kilometers north of Torsby. The village has a school from preschool up to grade nine, an after-school center, a library, a retirement home, a dental clinic, and a fire station. There is also a bank, restaurants, hotels, and a recreation hall with a swimming pool.

Services in Sysslebäck include Coop Sysslebäck, which is accessibility-adapted and serves as an agent for pharmacy, liquor store, lottery, and PostNord services. The village also has fuel stations, electric car charging points, and the store Näckåns RadioEL, which functions as a local service shop and parcel agent for several delivery companies.

Sysslebäck has a vibrant community life and a dynamic business sector, with companies in transportation, tourism, energy, and food production. The village is also known for its excellent fishing and its proximity to both natural attractions and cultural sites.

Bograngen

Bograngen is located about 75 kilometers north of Torsby, along road 964, just 8 kilometers from the Norwegian border. The village has a church, a heritage center, assisted living facilities, and sports facilities such as tennis and hockey courts, as well as fitness trails. There is also an active community life and businesses within tourism, crafts, transportation, and carpentry.

Bograngen is a borderland community characterized by cross-border trade, tourism, and strong local engagement. Activities such as drive-in bingo, heritage events, and nature excursions are regularly organized here.

Höljes

Höljes is located along road 62, about 100 kilometers north of Torsby and less than 30 kilometers from the Norwegian border at Långflon. The village has a church, a heritage center, an outdoor swimming pool, and an active community life. There are also businesses in sectors such as forestry and construction.

Services are available at Höljes Lanthandel, which serves as both a grocery store and a local service point. Here you’ll find fuel, a small café corner, postal and parcel services, a recycling station, and regular stops by the mobile library.

Höljes is best known for hosting the FIA World Rallycross Championship, organized by Finnskoga Motorklubb every summer, attracting around 50,000 visitors. The village also offers great nature experiences, with trails such as Nordvärmlandsleden and hikes to Granberget, the highest mountain in Värmland.
